As a health coach in a medical weight loss program, I have the joy of working with amazing patients every day. I get to celebrate their wins, help them through challenges, and share plenty of laughs (often at my expense) along the way. My goal is simple: support my patients in creating lasting, healthy habits that go far beyond the scale.
One common challenge I see is relying too much on medication to lose weight. Medications like GLP-1 agonists can be life-changing, giving patients control over their appetite and cravings for the first time in years. The thrill is real! But here’s the tricky part: if the medication does all the work, the weight often comes back, whether some or all, when the medication stops.
Why Medication Alone Isn’t Enough
Semaglutide is an incredible tool, but it’s just that—a tool. I hear myself saying this every day. It can help you get started, but it can’t teach you the habits needed to keep the weight off. Some patients even love not feeling hungry and skip meals entirely, but that’s not a sustainable or healthy approach. Food isn’t the enemy; it’s fuel. The goal is to embrace nourishing, balanced meals that support your body and your goals. I often use words like “nourishing” to drive this point home.
This is where we work together to make lasting changes. Here’s how:
Celebrate All the Wins
Weight loss is great, but let’s celebrate other victories too—like more energy, better sleep, or feeling stronger. These wins remind you that it’s about living a healthier, fuller life.
Build a Foundation
While medication gives you a boost, lasting success comes from building habits:
- Nutrition: Create meals that satisfy and nourish. Embrace prepping your meals and making great food. Get everyone in on the action and make it a family affair.
- Movement: Find activities you love and make them part of your routine, but don’t overthink it. Walking is free and can be done anywhere, even in your house. I always say, “The best exercise is the one you’ll do.”
- Mindset: Be kind to yourself and find healthy ways to manage stress. I suggest meditation, but it doesn’t have to be sitting with your legs crossed and highly focused. It can be anywhere at any time. Simply try being present. Use your mental remote control button and “mute” that inner voice for a minute or two. Maybe even look around and note something you can express a little gratitude for. Did anyone see that sunrise this morning 🙂
Stay Connected
Accountability makes all the difference. Whether it’s regular check-ins with me (your biggest cheerleader!) or leaning on a supportive community, having someone in your corner keeps you on track.
Enjoy the Journey
Weight loss isn’t a straight line, and that’s okay. Focus on progress, not perfection. Celebrate how far you’ve come, and keep going. I often encourage folks to have some tenderness here. Encourage yourself like you would encourage a best friend.
