The Case for Laser Hair Removal in Men

Changing Cultural Norms for Men

Laser hair removal used to be the domain of women, but not anymore. Cultural norms towards “male grooming,” and how they self-care, are shifting. The masculine move towards laser hair removal for men is an example of how attitudes are changing. Laser hair removal definitely challenges the perception of how men groom themselves in 2025. The relaxing of traditional views sets the stage for men to realize the benefits of laser hair removal. At Profile MD, we think body hair is just fine, but some men find certain areas to be uncomfortable. For example, men often like to get neck hair removed to stop the problem of ingrown hairs.

You might want to consider laser hair removal if you are tired of daily shaving, or if you dread the discomfort of waxing. It gives you maximal improvement with minimal effort. Manscaping with laser hair removal offers a more permanent result with little to no pain.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal for Men

Laser hair removal improves hygiene and well-being for men. Removal of hair from the back, chest, and armpits helps to reduce sweat and odor. Getting neck hair treated stops the need for frequent shaving, reduces razor burn, and stops the inflammation caused by ingrown hairs. You can expect the following benefits.

  • Reduced sweat and bacteria when back, chest, and underarms are treated.
  • Freedom from shaving, razor burn, and skin irritation.
  • Smoother more comfortable skin that is free from stubble.
  • Increased confidence at the gym, at the beach, or in romantic situations.
  • Enhanced athletic performance if hair is removed from the legs or the arms, because there is less resistance in movement.
  • Improved comfort because hair does not get caught in clothing or equipment.
  • A more polished appearance that leads to a boost in self-esteem.

The Most Common Areas for Male Laser Hair Removal

The most common areas for hair removal on men are the back and chest, beard shaping, and an increased interest in hair removal in intimate areas, the Mankini/Brozilian. Men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are embracing more modern societal standards for self-care that associates them with greater confidence and professionalism.

Convenience is also a consideration for the modern man. Laser treatment reduces the discomfort of ingrown hairs on the neck and beard line caused by daily shaving. Men also seek laser hair removal on the arms and legs to enhance their performance in swimming, cycling, and in body building. Less hair equals less resistance and faster movement. An interest in hair removal on the groin and buttocks has noticeably increased with both men and women wanting a smooth and well-groomed appearance.

What Is the Process for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal (LHR) utilizes a focused beam of laser light aimed at hair follicles. The laser is attracted to chromophore (color) in the hair follicle. Laser light heats up the hair follicle damaging it at its root. Over the course of several treatments, the follicles are damaged or destroyed. This process leads to fewer hairs or no hair at all. The treatment may not make you completely hair free because your body can renew some of the hair follicles. The goal is noticeable hair reduction that may require a few maintenance sessions. However, do not use this technology if you think you might want to grow hair there in the future. For example, treatment in the beard area might not be advisable if you are not 100% sure of what you want.

Who Is Best Suited for Laser Hair Removal?

People with dark hair and light skin provide a very good target for the laser. The contrast draws the laser light into the follicle containing a dark hair. People with darker complexions can also be treated with the Nd:YAG Laser in offices utilizing laser technology. The YAG is applicable for a variety of skin tones. A skilled medical technician will consider your skin tone when adjusting the settings of the laser. Lasers do not provide good service for people with very blond or red hair. That is because these hair shades do not have enough pigment to attract the laser beam.

What if a Person Has Tattoos?

Laser hair removal cannot be done directly over a tattoo because it can damage the ink in the artwork causing it to fade. Experienced clinical technicians know how to work around the tattoo to give you a good result. Our providers Make sure that you get the safest and best result.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Most people experience long-term hair reduction. Hair becomes finer and lighter and many treated areas remain hair free. However, due to hormone fluctuations in the body, you may redevelop some hair follicles. The most common experience is to have a 90% permanent hair reduction. You may need an occasional maintenance treatment to handle residual hair growth often caused by hormone shifts. Usually, hair that returns is finer and lighter.

How Is Laser Hair Removal Priced?

Hair removal is priced according to the size of the area being treated and by how many treatments you need to accomplish the job. Profile MD sells packages of six treatments with two extra treatments for every purchased package. The package price gives you the advantage of two FREE treatments. This covers the need for any touch ups after your package is complete. It is important to note that hair removal requires multiple treatments because hair grows in cycles.

How Do I Prepare for Treatment?

You should shave the area to be treated one day before treatment. This helps to reduce irritation. Shaving is important because it allows the laser beam to better penetrate the hair follicle. Avoid using products with retinol for a week prior to laser treatment. It is also important to not tan prior to laser hair removal. Tanning increases the risk of a laser burn. Observing these important pre-treatment steps will enhance your good result.

Will I Be Comfortable During Treatment?

Treatment is fairly fast depending on the size of the area. For more sensitive areas, our clinicians prescribe a lidocaine cream to be applied one hour prior to treatment. This is most often used for Mankini hair removal and for work on the face, neck, or beard. You should bring this up with your clinician prior to treatment. You can also take an over-the-counter pain medication like Ibuprofen prior to treatment. Everyone differs in their tolerance for discomfort. However, most people find laser hair removal to be tolerable.

Aftercare Recommendations

  • Avoid products with perfumes or fragrances on treated areas for 48 hours.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on treated areas for 72 hours.
  • Don’t use a razor on treated skin until all irritation has subsided. Electric clippers may be okay.
  • Don’t use body scrubs for 48 hours.
  • No swimming for 48 hours.
