What is Laser Hair Removal?
You’ve likely heard of laser hair removal—and perhaps you’re even interested in it. But what exactly is it? Laser hair removal gets rid of unwanted body hair. Most people require six sessions, and they often need to do yearly maintenance treatments to catch stragglers. Our treatment is provided by our caring nursing staff.
Laser hair removal provides excellent treatment for those unhappy with shaving, waxing, or tweezing. It also benefits those who suffer from folliculitis. Shaving often causes raised pimple-like spots with folliculitis, but laser hair removal works best for this condition.
How does Laser Hair Removal work?
Hair grows in stages. Sometimes the hair follicle is active; other times it is inactive, such as when a hair falls out. A hair follicle must be in the anagen or growth phase for the laser beam to interact with it.
The laser works by transferring heat that interacts with the color that is in the hair. Dark hair responds best to laser heat by absorbing it and transferring it to the follicle. The follicle is then destroyed and hair growth is stopped.
Keep in mind you will need multiple treatments to catch the various stages of hair growth. Sometimes the follicle is active and other times it is empty.
What Happens Before and During Body Hair Removal?
Your clinician will advise you to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds two weeks before treatment because it can skew treatment settings and effectiveness. Avoid exposing your treated area to the sun for several days after treatment to avoid irritation.
We do ask that you shave the area a day or two before your treatment. You will be prescribed a special lidocaine cream for numbing the skin. This cream will be wiped off before treatment; once the cream is removed, you will be given protective eyewear for your safety. Treatment begins after you’ve put on your protective eyewear.
The treatment time takes anywhere from 15 minutes for small areas to 60 minutes for larger areas. Afterward, you can apply Aloe Vera to cool any burning sensation you might experience. Our nurses offer this for sensitive areas. Your next appointment should be scheduled six weeks from the time of treatment.

What Results Can Be Expected From Laser Hair Removal?
Your first hair removal treatment may reduce hair production by 10% to 25%. It takes several treatments to hit all phases of hair growth.
After you finish your treatment series you might not have new hair growth for months or even years. Since the treatment series may not hit all your hair in the growth phase, you can expect some hair to grow back. This hair is usually lighter and thinner than the previous hair.
Yearly follow-up appointments are useful for addressing straggler hair.

Your comfort is very important. The GentleMax Pro has built in cooling to help minimize discomfort. We also prescribe a specially compounded lidocaine cream to apply one hour prior to treatment.
The laser works by disabling hair follicles that are actively producing hair at the time of treatment. Since the hair follicles are producing hair at different times, we recommend a package of six treatments for best results. Treatments should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
In some instances, touch up treatments can be needed years after your initial treatment. This may be due to hormone changes throughout life. Typically, laser hair removal results are long lasting.
