What is Laser Skin Rejuvenation?
Laser skin rejuvenation is a laser-based procedure used to improve various cosmetic concerns such as wrinkles, sun damage, acne scars, and aging. With this type of procedure, the damaged layer of the skin is removed using precise laser technology. This can reduce wrinkles and sun damage while simultaneously stimulating the body’s natural collagen production.
Laser skin rejuvenation is safe and effective. Our experienced providers can work with you to develop a plan specifically for your skin. For some patients this may be a more aggressive laser with longer downtime. For others this may include a series of treatments with minimal recovery. Whatever option makes sense for your schedule, rest assured Profile MD will keep you comfortable during your procedure.
Ablative vs. Non-Ablative Lasers
There are a variety of lasers commonly used for laser skin rejuvenation. Treatments using ablative lasers remove the top layer of the skin. For treatments with non-ablative lasers, the laser heats the skin tissue of the desired treatment area to produce new collagen, without causing damage to the surface.
The Different Lasers Used
Profile MD offers something to address many concerns and to suit any patient, regardless of skin type.
CO2 Lasers
Typically of the ablative variety, CO2 lasers treat scars, wrinkles, warts, and other deeper skin flaws.
Fractional Lasers
These lasers can be ablative or non-ablative and are used for age-related blemishes. A fractional laser uses beams of laser energy to treat a fraction of the targeted area. This method results in less downtime.
Pulsed-Dye Lasers
Pulsed-dye lasers heat the targeted area and absorb pigments to reduce redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, and port wine stains. These lasers are non-ablative and have a quick recovery.
Erbium (Er:YAG) Lasers
This ablative laser promotes collagen remodeling. Erbium lasers are popular for treating fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and skin laxity. This laser is particularly good at removing the “lipstick” or “smokers lines” found on the upper lip.
What Does Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treat?
Laser skin rejuvenation can:
- Treat fine lines and wrinkles
- Tighten eyelid skin
- Improve crow’s feet
- Remove dark spots including melasma and lentigos
- Repair smoker’s lines
- Soften pucker and frown lines
- Improve skin tone and texture
Treatments, such as laser hand rejuvenation, vaginal rejuvenation, and neck rejuvenation, are specifically designed to target various concerns in other areas of the body. See us for a free consultation to discuss your specific issues.
What Makes a Good Candidate for this Procedure
If you’re looking into laser skin rejuvenation, you’re probably wondering if you’re a suitable candidate. Good candidates for laser skin rejuvenation have cosmetic concerns such as:
- Acne scarring
- Uneven skin tone
- Scars/birthmarks
- Age/liver spots and keratosis
- Sun damage and melasma
- Post-facelift skin issues
- Enlarged oil glands
You Might Not Be a Good Candidate If:
- You have active acne
- You have deep wrinkles
- You have excessive or sagging skin
- You have a darker skin tone
We offer other solutions for patients who are not an ideal candidate for laser skin resurfacing or rejuvenation.
Laser Skin Rejuvenation with PRP
Our doctors take a small amount of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to obtain Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP aids in wound healing, triggers tissues to regenerate, and releases growth factors for cellular rejuvenation. There is no concern for rejection or an allergic reaction when using this product, because it comes from your own natural biology.
Our cosmetic physicians now use PRP to fight wrinkles, and to improve volume, tightness, and texture of the skin.
The doctors first treat the face, neck, décolletage, or hands with the Profractional Laser to open up deep micro-channels in the skin. Then, they directly apply the PRP to the skin. Your own natural cells soak into the micro-channels and go to work to improve your skin. Remaining PRP is injected under the skin to help support sagging tissues. You get the benefit of a double rejuvenation with the laser and the PRP.
This double rejuvenation heals fast because of the repairing factors in Platelet Rich Plasma. Downtime is minimal.
The Profile MD Laser Skin Rejuvenation Process
During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss laser facial rejuvenation and any questions or concerns you may have. This will help yield the best results and to decrease the odds of complications. These may start weeks before the actual procedure.
Laser facial rejuvenation is an outpatient procedure. The actual procedure only takes between 30 minutes to one hour depending on the complexity.
Will I Need Multiple Treatments?
Often a single session will treat the area of focus but most non-ablative lasers call for more. For an ideal outcome, it’s best to plan for multiple treatments.
Does Laser Skin Rejuvenation Hurt?
The pain of laser skin rejuvenation is often compared to having a rubber band snap against your skin. Pain can vary from patient to patient depending on pain tolerance and depth of procedure. To help with discomfort, we can numb the skin with an anesthetic. For deeper laser procedures your provider may recommend oral sedation. In this case you will need a driver.
How To Prepare for Your Skin Rejuvenation Treatments
We’ll go through specific preparations for your procedure during the consultation, but generally, for the best results, follow these tips to better prepare for treatment:
- Avoid tanning and heavy sun exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen daily four weeks before treatment.
- Don’t do other treatments like chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion four weeks before treatment.
- Avoid medications known for photosensitivity like doxycycline or minocycline at least 72 hours before treatment.
- Let your doctor know as soon as possible if you’ve had a history of herpes or shingles in the treatment area so proper precautions like antiviral medications can be taken as directed.
- To prepare the skin for the procedure, it may be recommended to apply a topical retinoid to your skin four weeks prior.
- Let Profile MD know if you have used Accutane in the past. We recommend waiting to have laser rejuvenation for a minimum of 6 months after stopping this medication.
Laser Skin Rejuvenation Recovery and Maintenance
Here is what patients can expect when it comes to recovery and maintenance of laser skin rejuvenation:
After Your Treatment
Once your treatment has been completed, expect your skin to be red, sensitive, dry, and peeling. Fresh, pinkish skin will appear soon after. We recommend a visit with our Esthetician in your post treatment period to help establish good skin care habits. Profile MD offers a full line of medical grade products, including ZO Skincare and our own Private Label products.
Post Care Instructions
We’ll review all of the necessary instructions for post-care once during your pre-procedure visit and again immediately after treatment. For the best care for your skin, follow these instructions:
- Don’t scratch or pick the treated area
- Avoid other facial treatments/products
- No smoking
- Apply a light layer of healing ointment twice a day
- Apply sunscreen and moisturizer daily
Comfort Tips
For extra comfort, you can sleep on an extra pillow and use a cool compress in addition to the healing ointment. Make sure to check with your doctor first to clarify if these options are right for you.
What Do Results Look Like?
It’s important to keep in mind with this type of procedure there will be downtime. Recovery time will vary from one individual to another based on the type of laser, depth of procedure, and the individual’s health and healing rate. While some non-ablative lasers have no downtime at all, it’s common to expect two to three weeks of pink, scabbing skin for deeper lasers. During this time, avoid activities like going to the gym or swimming which are known to cause infections.
Side Effects of Skin Rejuvenation
With most types of treatments, side effects are a common occurrence. These are the side effects you may experience following laser facial rejuvenation:
- Low risk of scarring
- Laser burns
- Infection
- Pigmentation loss
- Crusting
- Swelling
- Discoloration
Does This Treatment Work on Deeper Skin Tones?
Laser skin resurfacing does work on deeper skin tones but there is a higher risk of cell damage or discoloration. Erbium lasers are a great option in these situations because they pose less risk for discoloration. If during your consultation it’s deemed your skin tone could prove difficult, other skin resurfacing options could be a viable alternative.
Is There a Right Time to Have Skin Rejuvenation Done?
Skin can be hypersensitive to sun exposure for up to a year after treatment. Winter is a great time to schedule your laser skin rejuvenation treatment. Lasers for some things such as spider veins on the face, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and hemangiomas can be done at any time. Additionally, we offer some lasers such as SkinTyte that help build collagen without any downtime. This can be done at any time of year.

Will I have to take time off from work?
Most of the lasers used in rejuvenation cause only a day or two of redness. You can cover the redness with cosmetics, and our medical professionals have ColoreScience Mineral makeup to show you.
Does laser rejuvenation improve the appearance of scars?
Absolutely! Laser rejuvenation works by remodeling and building up collagen. Collagen is a naturally occurring substance that makes skin supple and provides support. Laser treatment flattens the scar and then collagen rebuilds in a healthy way.
How long do skin improvements last?
Depending on how you take care of your skin, improvements last 5-10 years. It’s important to protect yourself while in the sun, and to use quality skin care products to prolong and enhance your result. Ask about our doctor selected and customized skincare products for healthy luminous skin.
Can you rejuvenate other areas of the body?
Yes, and this is where laser rejuvenation gets lovely. The Skin Tyte laser tightens skin wherever it droops, broad band light wipes out age spots on arms and legs, and we use the Fraxel Laser on hands to remove discoloration and wrinkles.
