What kind of moles or growths can be removed?

The majority of moles fall into the cosmetic category for removal. Many patients inquire about mole removal for lesions that they do not like on their face or moles that are large, unsightly and in uncomfortable places. Laser mole removal in these cases is very straightforward, comfortable, and you get a pleasing cosmetic result. The doctor will of course carefully check the lesions to make sure that they are not undergoing change.
Skin Tags (Fibroepithealial Polyps) and Keratosis
These represent superficial skin lesions that are easy to remove with Laser. Skin tags are often found around the arm pit or neck and have a thin stalk. Keratoses are typically found in areas where sun exposure is frequent. These lesions have a waxy look to them.
What happens during the treatment appointment?
The doctor will meet with you and explain each step that he takes during the removal process. The following steps will occur:
- The doctor will inspect your mole(s) to see if any concerning changes are taking place such as changes in size, shape, color, or failure to heal. If so, the physician may recommend a biopsy.
- Your lesion will be numbed with lidocaine.
- The laser will then be deployed to vaporize the mole.
- Removal time takes about 10-15 minutes or longer if multiple moles are being treated.
- Small Band-aids are applied with instructions to keep the site clean and moist.
- A follow up appointment will be made to assess the results.
What should I avoid after treatment?
Daily application of antibiotic ointment and a band-aid will speed healing time. The treated area should be kept clean and covered to avoid infection. Avoid picking or scratching the lasered area to avoid scarring. Patients shower on the evening of their procedure and may return to working out in 24 hours.
Will the mole return after Laser?
A small amount of residual color may remain after healing. The doctors can clear this up at your follow up appointment if it is visible. Some patients notice it after a few months but it is easily treated. In the vast majority of cases, once the mole or skin tag is removed it does not come back!
