Why Your Facial Skin is Sagging

Noticing signs of sagging skin? You may wait for your perennially late friend, but time waits for no one. While there are those who say that’s a good thing when it comes to life experience, it’s a bad thing for your skin, particularly your facial skin. Most people would gladly delay the march of time in that instance.

Fortunately, the signs of aging, while unstoppable, can be delayed or their appearance lessened by the various procedures offered by the team at Profile MD. Some people wonder when they’ll know when it’s time to have something done. Here are the three signs of aging that usually prompt people to consider getting some help.

  1. Skin laxity— Gravity is a tireless worker, never taking a day off (unless you’re in the International Space Station) and never letting up. As you age, your skin is particularly susceptible to its forces. Also, facial muscles tend to weaken with age. This leads to drooping brows, jowls, sagging cheeks, descending eyelids, and much more.
  1. Volume loss— After you turn 20, collagen (the basic support system for your skin) production decreases one percent each year. Think about that — at 50 you’re producing one-third less collagen than at 20! Elastin, the protein responsible for keeping your skin supple and malleable, the production also decreases. The result is volume loss in areas across the face. The areas under the eyes and below the cheekbones both become hollow with volume loss.
  1. Changes in skin tone and texture— Where the skin was taut, plump, and smooth, as we age it becomes dull, dry, and leathery. This is usually the result of reduced collagen and elastin production combined with sun exposure. The skin also becomes thinner with time, again due to decreasing collagen, making it more prone to wrinkling.

Treatments

You have options for addressing these issues, both surgical and non-surgical. Volume loss and changes in skin tone and texture can all be addressed non-surgically. With dermal fillers, laser rejuvenation and laser resurfacing treatments all work to improve these areas. Skin laxity, especially if more extreme, can best be addressed with surgery: a facelift, brow lift, eyelid surgery, or ThermiRF.

And don’t stop with just the face

Dr. VanAntwerp and Dr. Mallalieu believe that steps to slow down the aging process should also look beyond just the face and should include the neck, chest, décolleté, and hands. These areas are often overlooked. Now that you know what’s behind your aging, sagging skin, what do you want to do to turn back the clock? Call us at Profile MD and let’s talk, 410-544-4600.
