Upper Arm-Lift for Trimmer and Tighter Skin
What is Brachioplasty?
Brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves the appearance of the upper arm. It restores the contour of the arm from the shoulder to the elbow. This upper arm-lift involves the surgical removal of excess skin and fat, resulting in smoother and thinner arms. It is often performed on people who lose a large volume of weight and are self-conscious of the remaining flaps of loose skin.
Brachioplasty improves definition and tone in the upper arms by:
- Reducing pockets of fat
- Trimming excess loose skin
- Tightening support tissue
- Smoothing the skin
Who Benefits From This Procedure?
- Those who have experienced loss of skin tone (elasticity) with age
- High-volume weight loss patients from surgery or weight loss programs
- Health conditions that cause skin to sag
- Anyone who suffers from self-image issues due to loose skin and needs a boost in self-confidence
Will Weight Training Substitute for Brachioplasty?
No, because weight training does not tighten loose skin. It does improve muscle tone which will help you maintain your surgical results once your surgeon okays your workout.
What Happens During an Arm-Lift?
- Most people receive local tumescent lidocaine to numb the surgical site. Our surgeon may recommend that you also take an oral medication to relax you before having the lidocaine injected. General anesthesia can also be administered by an anesthesiologist if necessary.
- An incision is made under the arm from the armpit to the elbow. The size of the incision depends on how much of a procedure you need.
- Loose skin is trimmed and laser liposuction is used to remove excess fat.
- Stitches are applied to close the wound and to tighten supportive tissue.
- Dressings are applied. A compression garment is then placed over the dressings to reduce swelling.
What Is Brachioplasty Recovery Like?
We encourage our patients to walk and use their arms the day after surgery. Patients must wear a compression garment for a few weeks following surgery. Low-stress movements such as desk work can be restarted within a few days after surgery.
Aggressive movements involving lifting or raising the arms 90 degrees above the shoulder should be avoided for two weeks after treatment.
You may return to the gym for weight lifting after six weeks, or when the surgeon approves it.
Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Brachioplasty?
You’re considered an ideal candidate for brachioplasty surgery if:
- You have skin flaps on your upper arms.
- You can accept the appearance of a long upper arm scar.
- Your weight is stable and you are not gaining or losing significant weight.
- You do not have medical issues like anemia that cause surgical risk.
- You are a non-smoker.
- You are motivated to improve your physical image and your self-image.
