Recognizing and Treating Unsightly Tummy Tuck Scars

What is a Tummy tuck?

Abdominoplasty, more commonly called a “Tummy Tuck”, involves the surgical removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen. Surgeons also tighten sagging abdominal muscles during the repair. The surgery involves making a large incision across the lower abdomen to develop a smoother and tighter abdominal contour. Over 160,000 procedures were performed in the United States in 2022.

While abdominoplasty requires six to eight weeks of recovery time, it is one of the more popular procedures. According to surveys patients view it as a procedure most worth having. In fact, with the rise of Ozempic weight loss, it is more frequently requested. People who have lost a large amount of weight, or who have experienced childbirth seek this treatment to correct excess sagging skin and weak muscles. However, complications sometimes arise.

Three Main Complications Can Arise with Abdominoplasty

Infection:

There is a chance of infection whenever skin is cut. Antibiotic coverage before, during, and after the procedure reduces the risk.

Unsightly scarring:

Dog ears occur as a fullness or pucker at the ends of an incision line. They are mostly composed of fatty material that can be removed in a minor surgical procedure. If the dog ears are large the surgeon may also perform liposuction

Hypertrophic scars are slightly raised pink or red scars that occur along the incision line. They can be itchy and uncomfortable. Laser scar removal treatments help to flatten them and remove the color. Wearing compression garments also helps to prevent their development.

Seromas:

are a fluid collection that can occur on the surgery site. This complication can cause swelling and pain. Draining the seroma with a needle relieves the pressure, and compression clothing can prevent further development. Surgeons also can leave drains in the incision to prevent seromas.

Tips to Reduce Tummy Tuck Scars

Most cosmetic surgeons prescribe compressive garments for people to wear for several weeks following surgery to aid in proper healing. Here are a few tips for avoiding unsightly scars:

  • Follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions.
  • Quit smoking before surgery because it hinders healing.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat a diet rich in vitamins and minerals to promote natural healing.
  • Avoid exposing your scar to the sun.
  • Avoid heavy lifting until your surgeon okays that activity.

What if I Experience Problems With My Tummy Tuck Scar?

If you experience issues such as an unsightly scar, dog ears, or contour irregularity, Profile MD can help. Our medical staff uses the V-Beam Pulsed Dye Laser and the Sciton Profractional Laser to improve the color and texture of scars.

Postoperative swelling is normal, but a seroma may be present if swelling becomes pronounced. Often surgeons leave drains in place after abdominoplasty to prevent the formation of a seroma. Cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jared Mallalieu can perform a small surgical correction to remove the dog ear scar, or laser-assisted liposuction to smooth the irregularity. These procedures are typically done with a local anesthetic and recovery time is minimal. For help call 410-544-4600. Our staff will schedule you for a FREE consultation.
