What is Awake Laser Liposuction?

Laser liposuction differs from traditional liposuction because the laser’s heat softens the fat and makes it easier to remove. In addition, the laser tightens skin and builds collagen. Patients have minimal discomfort and heal quickly.

Awake liposuction is performed with local anesthesia. If you want liposuction but the thought of going under general anesthesia makes you nervous, awake laser liposuction might be the perfect alternative. You’re relaxed and pain-free during the procedure. Afterward, you have fewer aftercare restrictions and can return to normal life sooner.

You may be wondering what the laser liposuction procedure looks like. Here’s what you can expect from laser liposuction at Profile MD:

1. Marking Fat Removal Areas

Our surgeon will mark your desired areas for targeted fat removal.

2. Preparation for Treatment

Profile MD specializes in awake liposuction. Depending on the extent of the procedure and the surgeon’s preference, laser liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation. Most laser liposuction procedures are performed with local tumescent lidocaine. It is easy and comfortable.

Your surgeon might recommend general anesthesia for multiple areas of fat removal. In that case, anesthesia would be administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist or anesthetist.

3. Laser is Administered

Once tiny incisions have been made, the surgeon will insert slender cannulas in the target area to access the fat you want to eliminate.

4. Fat Suction

Once tiny incisions have been made, the surgeon will insert slim cannulas in the target area to access the fat you want to eliminate.

After the cannulas are inserted, the surgeon will set the laser to the correct wavelength to heat and soften body fat. The surgeon then begins suctioning to remove the fat you want gone.

5. Recovery

Recovery is generally faster with an awake liposuction procedure. You avoid the grogginess, nausea and systemic side effects associated with general anesthesia, and you can return to light activities quickly (a few days).

If the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, recovery from effects of the anesthesia will take longer, and overall downtime might be longer as well.

Most laser liposuction procedures at Profile MD are performed awake with local anesthesia. This means you are alert but comfortable throughout the procedure and recover faster. General anesthesia is available if you prefer, but the majority of our patients choose the awake option for its benefits.

How long is the recovery period for Awake laser liposuction?

Awake Liposuction is an ambulatory procedure. This means patients are up and moving as soon as surgery ends. In some cases where small areas are targeted, patients can return to work the next day.

For cases involving multiple areas or larger areas, patients usually take 24-48 hours to recover. Patients should refrain from strenuous exercise for 2 weeks or until cleared by Dr. Mallalieu. In most cases, patients are asked to wear compression garments for 6-8 weeks. These garments ensure the best results for healing.

When will I start to see results?

You will notice changes right away, but full results will take a few weeks to appear. As bruising and swelling dissipate, your new curves will reveal themselves.
