What is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Laser Tattoo Removal is an aesthetic procedure used for removing unwanted or undesirable tattoo ink from your skin using laser technology. During the procedure, a laser emits a powerful pulse of light that heats and breaks the tattoo ink into smaller particles. Over time, the body’s immune system clears the ink causing the tattoo to fade and eventually disappear. Your tattoo fades with each treatment, but it takes a minimum of six treatments and possibly more to completely remove all ink.

Our Laser Tattoo Removal Procedure

You may be wondering what the tattoo removal procedure is like. Here’s what you can expect from tattoo removal at Profile MD:

1. Numbing of the Area

The doctor prescribes a powerful lidocaine cream that you apply one hour before treatment. The doctor may also locally numb areas that are still sensitive.

2. Laser Treatment

Next, the doctor will calibrate the laser to a specific wavelength, which will break up the tattoo ink. Depending on the size and color of your tattoo as well as your skin type, multiple lasers may be used. Our doctors have three different lasers available, so they can safely and successfully remove tattoos from all skin types.

3. Aftercare

Following treatment, your skin will be red, raised, and sensitive. We recommend keeping the area covered for 5 days after treatment, but patients may resume all activities including showering and exercise.

FAQs

Will laser tattoo removal completely erase my tattoo?

Laser Tattoo Removal can remove entire tattoos. It is important to keep in mind that in some cases tattoos cannot be completely removed. During your free consultation, the doctor will give you a good idea of what the possible outcomes may be.

It is important to us that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Before the procedure, our providers will prescribe a numbing cream for use with each treatment. Additionally, they can inject local anesthetic to keep you comfortable. If desired we also offer the FDA cleared Pro-Nox system. Pro-Nox safely delivers patient controlled Nitrous Oxide (“laughing gas”) to eliminate anxiety and reduce pain.

After tattoo removal treatments you will apply Aquaphor or Petroleum Jelly to the treated area for five to seven days following your procedure. We do ask that you keep the freshly lasered skin covered for a few days.
